Hardcore social media-ites load their smartphones with a social aggregator app, like TweetDeck (free, four stars) or HootSuite (free, 4 stars), a one-stop-shop for keeping pace with Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, and so on. except for those for whom Twitter is that the be-all, end-all network, the official Twitter app for Android (free) can do rather nicely. the newest version (2.1.2) adds support for multiple accounts moreover as optional push notifications, 2 options that had been sorely lacking previous. A clean user expertise and sensible style puts the Android Twitter app within the huge leagues—in the first days of Twitter, its own apps (when they finally became available) weren't as competitive and feature-rich because the ones third parties designed for the 140-character social network. But now, Twitter-focused smartphone users can notice that the official Twitter branded app is that the thanks to go. better of all, if you do not have a Twitter account and are not inquisitive about joining, you'll still use the app to go looking and skim the location.

No Account and Multi-Account Features

After downloading and installing the Twitter for Android app from the Android marketplace, you can start using the app immediately, even before you authenticate an account. The app mimics Twitter's website by allowing even non-members to search and read the site, a token feature that will surely win over lurkers far and wide.

More likely than not, though, if you're downloading the app, you do have a Twitter user name and password, and perhaps more than one. Sign in with one of them to start. To add more accounts, you first have to be logged in (then tap the options button and select Accounts). After you've set up all your accounts, you can toggle between them using the Accounts button. Switching between accounts is easy, fast, and efficient.

Design and Customization
Rather than bombard your eyes with a cheery digital bluebird blue, the Twitter app sticks to a more sophisticated shaded gray color scheme. It looks serious and practical, a no-nonsense interface that takes into consideration the growing number of business users and content on the site. The app's look is sharp enough to still be appealing to people who use Twitter for personal or casual reasons, too.

Each account has its own customization panel, which is where you can enable and disable push notifications. The array of ways Twitter for Android can alert you to messages is staggering: dozens of ringtones, vibration, a pulsing light. The ringtone and vibration options worked well and weren't overbearing, although I never noticed the light notification.

You can also customize which photo upload service you want to use (yfrog, Twitpic) and adjust the font size.

In addition to all the customization options, one other intelligent feature that I appreciated was how the app handled this situation: I posted a new message, and it appeared at the top, but then realized I hadn't refreshed my stream in a while, so the most recent tweet below my latest one was several minutes old. When I refreshed the page using the drag down and release motion, the app reorganized my stream so that my latest tweet—the most recent one of the bunch—fell into chronological order with all the other tweets that had just loaded. Floating my most recent tweet helped me know in a snap that my tweet didn't get lost in the refresh.

The Twitter-Branded App
The official Twitter app for Android phones is one of the nicest dedicated apps for the site, especially now that it supports multiple user accounts and push notifications. However, aggregator tools like Tweetdeck, Hootsuite, and Seesmic are still more efficient for handling accounts across social media sites, like Facebook, Foursquare, LinkedIn, and the rest.
